Irving Penn, 1917-2009, was an American photographer known for his fashion photography, portraits, and still lifes. Penn was one of the first photographers to pose subjects against a simple grey or white backdrop. Penn's career spanned almost 70 years. He worked with Vogue as well as independent advertising for clients such as Clinique. In 1995 he donated his archive to the Art Institute of Chicago. I saw some of his work at the museum on our field trip today, and I really enjoyed the simplicity but also very close attention to detail in his photographs.
